President Donald Trump has extended his control of Washington, D.C. taking management of Union Station, the city's main transportation hub, away from Amtrak, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced on Wednesday (August 27) via the Associated Press.

Duffy was set to join Amtrak President Roger Harris at Union Station for the launch of the new high-speed train NextGen Acela when he issued the statement Wednesday morning, claiming Union Station had "fallen into disrepair" when it should serve as a "point of pride" for Washington, D.C.

“By reclaiming station management, we will help make this city safe and beautiful at a fraction of the cost,” Duffy said via the Associated Press.

Last week, Trump said he wanted $2 billion from Congress to beautify Washington, D.C. amid his ongoing crackdown of the city. The president sent thousands of National Guard troops and federal law enforcement to patrol the streets, claiming the city had been “overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs and homeless people" while announcing his "Liberation Day" decision.

Trump claimed that his administration was "not going to let it happen anymore" and vowed to remove homeless encampments from all public places, which includes parks and underpasses. Recent DC Metropolitan Police Department data showed that Washington D.C. has experienced a 26% drop in violent crime compared to 2025, with overall crime down 7% in the last year, according to the New York Post. Trump, however, downplayed the numbers as "phony" and claimed Attorney General Pam Bondi was "looking into that."
